Finding Your Ideal Business Partner

Partnering with other people brings you a golden opportunity to start up your business. They say ‘together we can make it happen’. For instance, you may have a brilliant business idea, but you lack financial assistance to execute it. In that case you always have the opportunity to find a person who is willing to provide the financial back up for your business idea. Then together you two can really make it happen.

As I mentioned, building up a partnership can be very beneficial for your business, both financially as well as from the management perspective. However in order to achieve synergies, you need to find ideal partners that match you. This is not an easy task as this should be done very carefully, analyzing both you and your potential partners. Most importantly you should choose the partners with your head but not with your heart.

The objective of this article is to discuss some of the important aspects in selecting your ideal business partner.

Do I need a partner after all?

Although partnering with somebody else can be beneficial, it may not be so always. Especially partnering with another party of course means sharing of profits as well as losing the individual control you exercise. If you are willing to sacrifice some degree of control and profits for additional financial resources and/or business expertise your partner brings in, yes go ahead to build the partnership.

Do we have common interests?

Your partner should share your basic values and he/she should have commitment to a common goal or interest. This is really important because if you two do not have common interests later you two may find yourselves in frequent conflicts which may deteriorate the relationship between you and your partner, ultimately resulting in the ceasing of the partnership.

Can my partner compensate for my weaknesses?

First you need to conduct a realistic assessment of your strengths and weaknesses to determine what you are good at and what you are not. Then you need to carefully asses whether your partner can bring in resources, skills and expertise to negate your weak points.

Is your partner a relation or a friend of you?

Many people believe that family and friends make logical business partners since you have already established relationships with them. However this is not the case. In fact empirical studies reflect that they are the worst business partners. In a business you need to take critical decisions which should be based on a pure rational. So there is no way it can become biased. When you have partnerships with your relatives and friends it is difficult to be unbiased. Similarly emotional ties you have with your partners make it difficult in certain instances such as in heated arguments. At the end of the day you may destroy both the business relationship as well as the emotional relationship. So the bottom line is you should try to prevent partnering with them as much as possible.

Conclusion

These are some of the fundamental things you need to consider in selecting your ideal business partner. Do not forget that this only provides a basic guideline for you. Criterion for the ideal partner may differ from case by case. So it’s always a good idea to present your case to a business consultant and get some advice that may be specific to your business partnership.
