Who is a Baker/Cake Decorator?

You will do the baking, the decorating and the delivery, if necessary. The idea is to go that extra mile to make the customer happy (and may we say, quite dependant on you!). What you bake is entirely up to you, depending on your experience and skill. Maybe you can do 10 items, maybe you can do 20.

Sometimes, you will be given a specific idea for decorating. Or, you will have to use your creativity and come up with a design. You have to impress your clients so it’s best if you can have a repertoire of designs and decorating ideas up your sleeve, even if the customer gives creative input. Plus, you would want to make each cake different and special.

We are not talking about skills here, because, you wouldn’t be considering this business if you couldn’t bake. This is where you decide whether you can make the transition from housewife to businesswoman. If you’ve been baking for your friends, for special gathering and parties, now is the time to charge them for your time, skill and expenses. Can you do that without guilt? If not, you won’t get very far in this business.

If there are already several well established bakeries in your neighbourhood offering yummy food for reasonable prices, you will face tough competition. If you have the skill and experience to specialize in wedding cakes or anniversary cakes, then go for it! It will help to draw a healthy customer base and make you stand out from the other bakery shops. Keep your prices at the level of other bakeries, unless you are confident your recipes are a marked improvement over theirs. You can re-evaluate prices as you go along.

One drawback in this business is that most parties and gatherings take place in the weekend so you need to sacrifice family time for work. Talk with your partner and see whether he is ok with you being unavailable for fun activities in the weekends.
